Just like any skill in the corporate world, a good interview skill is very much required. Some may be born to be good speakers and others are good in projecting a good image of themselves to other people, but these talents can definitely be picked-up along the way for those who are willing to learn.
Passing the interview is actually a combination of what you inherently have and basic preparations. Below are tips that will help you develop an interview skill:
1. Preparation is the key
You will never run out of answers as long as you come prepared. Before showing up for your interview, make sure that you know the basic information about the company and the position that you are applying for. Check out the firm's website or ask around from people who may have idea how the office works.
Knowing the company will at least help you answer questions such as why do you want to become a part of their organization or how would you be able to contribute to their growth.
This is deemed as the best interview skill ever.
2. Dress Appropriately
Of course, appearances matter. Unless your work will confine you to very secluded quarters, employers would always want their people to be excellent walking and living advertisements of their company.
Whether to wear a coat and tie or just a long sleeved shirt really depends on the nature of the job and the dress code of the company that you're aiming to work for. You should include this in your research. Take care that you do not come overdressed as your outfit may be the only thing that your interviewer remembers of you when you leave the office.
3. Speak to express and not to impress
In terms of communication skills of applications, interviewers always loath those who (1) speak very little that you literally have to squeeze information from him and (2) have a lot to say that it's hard to stop him.
Be neither of the two. When you have done your homework as discussed in item number 1, you will always have something to say. On the other hand, remember that anything you say can be used against you, so take care that you say things that are only relevant to the job. The interviewer does not have the luxury of time to listen to your life story however interesting it seems.
Don't forget the following important gestures: shake hands, make eye contact and smile.
Bye the way, it's also rude to answer your phone in the middle of the interview. The interviewer is giving you his or her undivided attention, which you must also repay with yours.
4. Know Your Facts
It's ironic if you do not memorize information about yourself by heart. This specific interview skill is the easiest to have. You have no right to mess this up. Most companies will ask you to fill out a separate application form and personal data sheet even if you have submitted your resume in advance. You should be ready with your answers.
5. Develop Your Listening Skills
Communication is a two-way thing. You don't get to speak always as there are times when you should listen too.
It's a turn-off to give answers that are entirely not related to what is being asked, only because the other person was not listening carefully.
6. Avoid Badmouthing Past Employers
First, it's in the past. Second, there are thousands ways to skin a cat - which means that there are a thousand ways of explaining why you left your former job because your boss was an idiot. And third, the interviewer might know your previous boss or the company. It's a small world after all. Definitely, badmouthing or sourgraping are interview skills that should not be developed at all.
7. Be Grateful Enough to Say Thank You
A thank you letter is the best way to go. It gives the company a good impression of you and the opportunity to recap your selling points. Skills need practice to be enhanced. An interview skills is not developed overnight also. If you think you did not do well in the first interview, run the whole episode in your mind and take note of the things to improve on. This will make you more confident in the next job opportunity.
Besides, that first company was probably not meant for you.
